Ubud’s Sacred Monkey Forest

A visit to Ubud is not complete without a stroll through the Sacred Monkey Forest! This is one of Ubud’s greatest spaces, the nature is magnificent; you won’t find another jungle like it in the hood. Temples reside within the forest and are covered with free-roaming monkeys. Large banyan trees dominate the space where spirits reside, coy fish swim in temple-like ponds, and bridges run above river valleys where monkey’s bathe below.

Enjoy the serene jungle landscape as you stroll down the paths that wind around the giant trees and jungle vines, take in the peaceful vibes that surround you… until, you buy bananas! On-site banana stalls sell (somewhat over-priced) bunches of ‘nanas for monkeys to munch, and shamelessly pursue you in search of their delicious treats. If you buy a bunch, don’t expect to go strolling around calmly sharing… no no, it’s fair game as the boldest monkeys will beeline straight towards you!

If you’d rather not encounter direct contact with the monkeys, you can still walk through the forest and observe the soulful critters with ease and without disturbance, simply avoid buying bananas. Another good rule of thumb is to keep hands out of pockets, as they suspect you’re hiding food! Use common sense and there’s no reason to fear these adorable creatures, they are entertaining to observe; especially the babies clinging to their mamas (can we hear a collective “naaawwwwww”?).

As Ubud’s most popular tourist destination, it gets a little busy. Arrive early in the morning (it opens at 8.30am) if you want some monkey-selfies without fellow travellers photo-bombing you. Tickets are available at the front gate.
